Musings of an Entertainment Junkie: 5 Lessons to learn from Davido’s Skelewu Video Controversy
Davido is one of Nigeria biggest music stars. He is young, vibrant and full of energy. Although he comes from a rich home, he has managed to carve a respectable niche for himself in the Nigerian Music Industry, selling out shows in his home base and abroad.
Recently, Davido found himself in the middle of a mild video controversy. He had shot a video for his hit song titled “SKELEWU“ with one of Nigeria’s best video directors Sesan and apparently he wasn’t pleased with the video. Irrespective of this, someone still went ahead and leaked it to the public, turning it to “the case of the two videos”.
Davido did not waste time in coming on twitter to disclaim the video and also did not waste time in stating that a new video was being shot a few days later by London Based Director Moe Musa. The question still remains though, “who leaked the first Skelewu video”? Maybe one day, Davido will make us privy to that information. Although we can’t always avoid mishaps because you cant read minds or predict the next person, I have come up with 5 Lessons we could learn from how “the case of the two videos” played out
1. Trust no one: Judging from his tweet, Davido implied he knew who did it. When you do not want sensitive information getting out, do not surround yourself with insensitive people. If the person you feel put the information out is a professional you trusted, then look at my number 2 lesson.
2. No matter how miniscule, have a confidentiality agreement: The video was leaked and yet it seemed nobody was legally held liable or accountable. Whomever leaked a video that is considered his intellectual property, will more than likely go scot free. When there are confidentiality agreements put in place, people who have access to such material will be more careful with it so that they do not get sued.
3. Once it’s out, let it go: It’s easier to play off a good video than to agree with the masses that your video was shit. It’s like giving a loaded gun to trigger happy people. They will build on it and use it to their advantage and your disadvantage.
4. You can’t please all of the people all of the time: Davido was obviously trying to please his fans, else why spend money on two videos? What we should all realize is you can’t please everyone. The same people who complained about that first video also turned around to say they like the first video. Some people just talk to join the band wagon and can’t even remember what they said so it is best to do you because you can’t please everyone.
5. Trust your instinct and get a good team: I am not saying Davido does not have a good team but either way it goes, as long as he and his team of professionals are pleased with the work that alone should satisfy their conscience. People will talk, people will hate and some will try to bring you down just because they feel they can. All that should never matter. Do you
So who was wrong and who was right? Which video did you prefer and did it really matter if he shot a new video or not? If you haven’t heard the controversial song you can download and listen on ITunes.
